If you ask people where they’re going for Thanksgiving, they typically say they’re going home, they’re going to their grandma’s house, they’re seeing their aunts and uncles. We celebrate the holiday - and many others - with those we’re connected to by blood. On Thanksgiving, we give thanks. We eat a good, large, home-cooked meal and we spend time with our families. But what about a holiday for the family... you choose?

Self-Evaluation

Creative writing has always been my favorite activity in school. In elementary school, it was always a topic we would cover. As we got older though, the focus switched from creative writing to essays and research - all of the boring stuff, with an occasional creative assignment. That was disappointing to me. Not only was it because I enjoyed making up stories and characters and new worlds to write about, but because I was always given great praise as a creative writer. I can’t say that stopped with the essays. English was one of my best classes throughout my middle through high school career. I always missed creative writing though. When I got to Rutgers, I decided to double major in Theatre and Journalism & Media Studies. With those two, there’s a wide range of fields I’m interested in - one of them being screenwriting. Taking this class, I thought the primary focus would be how to manipulate and work with our blogs and various media outlets with the creative writing sprinkled i...

Friendsgiving Free Write

Friendsgiving will tell the story of a group of friends, some of whom have known each other since the young age of five and some of whom met as late as their junior year of high school. Nonetheless, these sophomore college students share a bond that the distance of their universities did not break. The girls are a close knit group of friends and being as far north as SUNY Oneonta in upstate New York or as far south as the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia is no obstacle in remaining close. My film will explore female friendship and how this group has grown together, how they communicate now that they don’t see each other everyday, and what it means to choose your own family. Further, a new holiday has evolved in the past few years and this group hopped right on back in their sophomore year of high school. Although common among groups of friends more recently - especially in the millennial generation - Friendsgiving has been celebrated by these girls for years. Each “squad...

The Year of Spectacular Men

In Lea Thompson’s directorial debut with her daughters as the female leads, The Year of Spectacular Men, she tells the story of Izzy and her last months of college as well as the year that follows. She spends that year with her sister and meets various guys, looking for answers and endings but comes to realize that she doesn’t need an ending just yet. Despite the title, this indie film is about sisterhood and family. One of the most important lines, spoken by the mother (also played by Lea Thompson) is “Bitches need bitches”. The range of moods of the film are helped to be conveyed and emphasized through a variety of shots, blocking, lighting changes, and costume designs. The darkest lighting seems to be when Izzy is with her various boyfriends and flings, while the brightest are when she’s with her sister. This is not an attack on men, but an emphasis that her sister Sabrina is a source of light in all of her struggles. As annoying as she can be, she’s always trying to help and be the...

Friendsgiving Video Proposal

Title : Friendsgiving Theme/Concept : My film, Friendsgiving will conceptualize what it means to have strong friendships that last beyond high school with themes of female friendship specifically as well as growing up. Genre : Nostalgic documentary Synopsis : In our sophomore year of high school, my friends and I created an annual holiday for ourselves: Friendsgiving. Allie, Becca, Chloe, Dana, Leah, Julia, and I. Then our group grew and Sierra came to our next one. After that, our group shrank when Julia left. In the video, we will discuss the traditions of our version of Friendsgiving - and how they’ve evolved. We’ll discuss our roles in the friend group and what we mean to each other, discuss memories we have with each other, how our friend group has grown and shrunk, what maintaining our group after high school has been like, etc. The video is meant to be nostalgic, but not all serious. Moments of being ridiculous and crazy are important because that’s truthfully a huge part of how...

Title: Cooking with College Kids Theme/Concept: Advice/Stories for prospective college students on a broad range of topics Genre: Advice/Interview/Cooking Synopsis: My video is intended to give a little more understanding of college to prospective students from a group of girls who are now in their sophomore year of college and have been friends since high school. Each of us has a broad range of experiences, interests, majors, and location/size/type of schools (ex: Northern vs Southern colleges; large vs small universities; city layout vs closed campus; traditional vs art school; STEM vs Arts and Sciences majors). To add a little more interest than a basic interview, we will be making our own first home-cooked meal in a while - something that is famously missed by many students. We will introduce ourselves and describe each of our respective schools a little and what our major and prospective careers could be. While cooking/baking we will discuss all of the many different asp...
